Marinas and fishing piers

As is usual for us in the winter we prefer to start our days early. Mornings in the south are the best time of the day. So with coffee and breakfast done we head out at 8:00 to explore some of the marinas and fishing piers in the Rockport-Fulton area. It's hard to explain how much water is around us so here is a map of part of the area they refer to as the Texas Coastal Bend. It is the lowland coastal area from Galvaston to Brownsville paralleled by the barrier islands. We had planned to go to the Aransas National Wildlife refuge in search of whooping cranes, alligators and armadillos.

But we got sidetracked walking docks in Fulton, checking bait shops and talking to local fishers. Well Bob did, the talking part that is. I spent some of my time just sitting on the wall in the sun watching the pelicans and gulls. The whole area made me think of first, the Royston beach road and secondly Beacon Hill Park in Victoria with its wind swept distorted trees.

Sharing the wall with my friends ....
One fishing, three watching, looks like municipal workers.....oops, slap ya mama, as they would say in Louisiana...

It is such a pretty, laid back area despite the fact that it's population swells with 'Winter Texans'. There are so many places to fish quietly, from a rocky shore or off one of the many, many wooden piers. A lot of them belong to private residences but there are a couple of great public ones too. We walked Fulton Pier and were the only people on it except for one lady at the very end sitting quietly by herself reading.

Making up for lack of pics yesterday:) Bob has now committed himself and bought a Texas fishing licence. So tomorrow morning we are going to the Copano Bridge fishing pier. I am taking my paints, my mini, to record all the catches and a lunch in case fishing is really good.

We have two more nice warm days before "the cold weather comes sweeping down on us from Northern Canada". News stations are reminding locals to remember where their warm coats are cos they're going to need them despite the fact that it's not even going to freeze!! Southern wimps. I say bring it on and then when it warms up again we are happy. Life needs balance and I never mind a little rain when we are away in the winter. Reminds of what I am missing:)
